How Docxels handles your documents
Last updated: 15 October 2026 (saved letterheads and signatures, theme colour choice)
1. Who we are
Docxels is a product of Pixels Limited ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Docxels app and this website.
2. Your documents stay on your device
Documents you scan, create, import or edit are stored on your phone, in the app's private storage, encrypted with a key kept in the Android Keystore. Scanning, text recognition, editing, converting PDF to Word (and Word to PDF) and PDF export all work offline on the phone; the file you choose to convert is read only by the app and is not uploaded. We do not receive your documents, we have no user accounts, and the app contains no advertising or analytics. The app asks for internet access for one purpose only: when you tap "Check for updates" in Settings, it reads a small version file and, if you choose, downloads the update from the Docxels release page hosted on GitHub. Where possible this is only a small file holding the changes since your version, from which the app rebuilds the new version on the phone and checks it against its fingerprint; otherwise the full app file is downloaded. Nothing about you or your documents is sent in that request, but, as with any web request, the host can see your device's IP address. The app never connects to the internet otherwise. Downloaded updates are accepted only if their fingerprint matches and they are signed with the same key as the installed app. Temporary working copies of PDFs are erased when you leave the tool, and the app shows a local-only warning if it detects a rooted or debugged phone (nothing is reported anywhere).
2B. Saved letterheads, signatures and settings
Letterheads and signatures you add in Settings (from a picture, a PDF or a Word file; the app finds the letterhead artwork or signature inside the file on your phone and leaves the letter text out) are kept on your phone in the app's private storage, encrypted with the same Keystore key as your documents. They are never uploaded; the app only reads the file you pick. Your look-and-feel choices (theme colour, light or dark, the editor view) and the app-lock options are saved in the app's private settings on the phone, and nothing about them is sent anywhere.
2A. Screenshots
Screenshots are allowed by default. In Settings you can turn on "Hide screen contents", which blocks screenshots and screen recording inside Docxels and hides the app in the recent-apps list. Docxels does not capture or send your screen.
3. Permissions the app asks for
- Camera: to scan documents. Photos are used only when you take or pick them.
- Files and photos: to import documents and pictures you choose, and to save or share exports where you decide.
- Fingerprint, face or screen lock: only if you turn on app lock. Android's own prompt does the check; Docxels never receives your biometric data or PIN, only whether the check passed.
4. Sharing and exports
When you export or share a document it goes only where you send it, using Android's share sheet or a folder you choose. Once a file is outside the app, its protection depends on where you put it.
5. AI features, cloud backup and sync
These are not part of the app today. If we add them, they will be optional and off by default, we will update this policy first, and we will ask for your consent before any document leaves your phone.
6. Security
We use the platform's secure storage for the encryption key, keep document contents out of logs, check files before opening them, and switch off Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer for the app. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your phone protected with a screen lock.
6A. Fonts and open-source software
The app's interface uses the Inter typeface (SIL Open Font License 1.1, © The Inter Project Authors), bundled inside the app, so no font is downloaded. Other open-source components include PdfBox-Android (Apache 2.0) for PDF tools and OpenCV (Apache 2.0) for image processing, and Google ML Kit for on-device text recognition. Full notices are in the app under Settings, About. Fonts named in Word documents (for example Calibri) are stored as names only; Docxels does not include Microsoft fonts.
7. Keeping and deleting data
Deleting a document in the app removes its pages from the phone. Saved letterheads and signatures can be deleted one by one in Settings. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored. Files you exported to Downloads or Pictures are yours to delete.
8. Children
Docxels is a general-purpose tool and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
